Battle of Monmouth Reenactment Recreates Revolutionary Times in NJ

Annual Battle of Monmouth Reenactment
Brings History To Life

Did you know that one of the most significant battles of the American Revolution took place right here in New Jersey? The Battle of Monmouth was one of the largest battles in the American quest for liberty and took place on June 28, 1778. The day was hot and steamy, typical of a New Jersey summer day, and as many or more men died from heat stroke as did from battle wounds. In the end, neither the Americans nor the British emerged a clear winner; however, the ragtag Americans proved themselves as a worthy fighting force against the professional British army. This provided a critical boost in morale for American forces and supporters of the fight for independence. For the first time, many believed that the volunteer American army stood a chance against British forces. The site of the battle is now preserved as Monmouth Battlefield State Park and each year this crucial event is recreated at the Battle of Monmouth Reenactment.

Every year on the weekend closest to the anniversary of the battle, hundreds of reenactors and thousands of history enthusiasts converge at Monmouth Battlefield State Park for the annual reenactment and a full weekend of living history. Beginning at 9am on Saturday morning, the army encampments welcome visitors. Visitors can watch the soldiers clean their muskets while their women prepare what may be their men’s last meal. Some of the officers may be drilling their men while others prepare for battle. Keep a close eye on your children or they may be drafted into one of the armies! Other fun things to do this at the reenactment include educational and entertaining historical presentations, tours of the camps, and shopping at the sutler (merchant who sells provisions to an army troops) area. The battle takes place each afternoon.

Admission to the Annual Reenactment of the Battle of Monmouth is free; a $10 parking donation is requested to help defray the cost of the annual reenactment. Visit the Friends of Monmouth Battlefield online for a full schedule of events.
