Hey everyone… lots of great things to do in New Jersey this week! We’ve got the year’s biggest history event in the state happening at Monmouth Battlefield State Park, a fantastic (and free!) 1. Spirit of the Jerseys State History Fair

Celebrate our state’s rich historical heritage at the Spirit of the Jerseys State History Fair! This free, award-winning historical festival will feature fun things to do and see for all ages including period games, live music, an antique car show, Civil War era photography demonstrations, antique bicycle demonstrations by the NJ Wheelmen, Lenape cooking demonstrations, 19th century baseball games, and much, much more! Don’t miss the opportunity to “meet” American General George Washington, Molly Pitcher, Ben Franklin, Ulysses S. Grant, Harriet Tubman, Walt Whitman, Dr. James Still, Admiral David Farragut, Emily Roebling, and other notable Americans and New Jerseyans! There will be several new Civil War themed programs this year, coinciding with the exhibit of a replica of President Lincoln’s casket on display in the park’s Visitor Center  Walt Whitman, portrayed by reenactor Darrel Ford, will read his poem, “Oh Captain, My Captain”, a tribute to President Lincoln.   General Ulysses S. Grant, portrayed by reenactor Kenneth Serfass , will reflect on his relationship and career with the late Commander in Chief. The 14th NJ Volunteers, Co. H, will provide an honor guard for the casket and the Fort Delaware Cornet Band will perform Civil War era music on period instruments.

On May 14th and 15th, Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst will open its doors to the community for the 2016 ‘Power in the Pines’ Open House and Air Show. The United States Air Force Thunderbirds will perform expert aerial maneuvers in their F-16 Fighting Falcons as headliners and part of an exciting sky show that includes several aerial demonstrations. The United States Army Golden Knights Jump Team will return to perform daring parachute maneuvers and – new this year – The Breitling Jet Team will take to the sky for awe-inspiring aerobatics as the largest professional civilian jet team performing today. The six vintage WWII aircraft of the GEICO Skytypers will perform precision flight maneuvers, where the diverse flying expertise of the team members aligns perfectly with the unique components of their overall performance. You’ll also see the F-18 Hornet Fighter Attack Aircraft in action and a demonstration by the Marine Air-Ground Task Force (MAGTF). Open to the general public, ground displays including aircraft and other military assets, military heritage displays, amusement zone for kids, food & beverage, and more are included in the free admission. Parking is also free.

3. SMASH! –
Spectacularly Merging Art, Science & History

The SMASH series at the NJ State Museum explores the fascinating intersection of science, art and history throughout the Museum and in our daily lives.  Visitors will enjoy an array of hands-on activities, experiments, demonstrations and shows, meet musuem experts, and examine museum collections through the lens of science. The May SMASH event is all about Natural History! There’ll be crafts, games and activities, all focusing on animals.

Visitors will be able to:

  • Meet museum Paleontologists and see fossils being prepared in the Paleo Lab. (Warning: there may be dinosaurs!)
  • Celebrate International Astronomy Day with the Planetarium crew & the Amateur Astronomers Association of Princeton
  • Enjoys special family activities in the Discovery Den
  • See the Philadelphia Zoo’s Zoo on Wheels (shows at 1pm & 2pm)
  • See special demonstrations and exhibits from Jenkinson’s Aquarium, the Trenton chapter of the American Chemical Society, and Princeton Graduate Women in Science & Engineering

4. 30th Annual New Jersey Seafood Festival

The New Jersey Seafood Festival returns to Silver Lake Park in Belmar this weekend! 5. Central Jersey Irish Festival
