Discover the Past at the Howell Living History Farm

Step back in time to the year 1900 at the Howell Living History Farm and experience what life was like in the New Jersey farming community of Pleasant Valley in Mercer County. This was a time when gasoline engines were just beginning to become a reality in agriculture, challenging man – and horse – power. But today you’ll see what farming life was like before that – when horses drawn plows were the norm and fetching something from the refrigerator meant taking a walk out to the ice house. There were lots of things to do on the farm, and everyone did their part – right down to the youngest child.

Begin your visit to the Howell Living History Farm with a self-guided tour, winding your way through the picturesque farm as you take in the sights, sounds, and smells of farming “the old-fashioned way”. You’ll see beehives, horses and sheep grazing in the green pasture, ducks and geese in the pond, and crops in the field. As you continue to the upper portion of the farm, you’ll be able to visit the chicken house, sheep barn, the main barn, the hog pasture, the apple orchard, the ice house, and the farm house. Maybe you’ll be able to try your hand at shelling and grinding corn grown right there on the farm. Or perhaps you’ll get to help milk a cow or gather freshly laid eggs! Springtime visits often include the special treat of getting to meet newly hatched chicks or newborn lambs.

If you visit the Howell Living History Farm on a Saturday, you’ll have the opportunity to experience seasonal hands-on public programs. Things to do include activities such as making cheese or ice cream in June (National Dairy Month), harvesting honey in August, making apple cider in November, or maple sugaring in February and March. A children’s craft project is offered most Saturdays. Public programs are also occasionally offered on Friday evenings and Sundays.
