Raritan Headwaters Association’s Stream Cleanup

Celebrate Earth Day by cleaning up local streams and rivers! Each spring Raritan Headwaters Association organizes cleanup programs to protect water quality and promote public stewardship of local streams and rivers. This year’s stream cleanup will be held on Saturday, April 16, 2016 from 9 am until 12 pm at multiple locations around the watershed in Hunterdon County, Somerset County, and Morris County. 11th Annual Montgomery Twp. Earth Day Recycling Fair

This year, the Montgomery Township Earth Day Fair will be a recycling only event.  Residents are invited to drop off metal (e.g. tools, pots & pans, yard furniture), electronics (e.g. printers, computer monitors), and bring any confidential documents for shredding (no 3-ring binders).  The Somerset County Sheriff’s Office will collect unwanted or expired prescription and over-the-counter medications (no needles or sharps).  Other groups will be on hand to accept gently used clothing; children’s toys and books (to benefit the Carolyn Stokes Day Nursery in Trenton); adult & children bicycles (for Boys & Girls Club of Trenton); sneakers & sporting goods (to support Kicks 4 Caribya); markers, highlighters and dry erase markers; wire clothing hangers; Brita filters, printer cartridges (Technician X), and more.  There will also be a canned goods/supply drive to benefit Montgomery’s Food Pantry (please check expiration dates).  The Pantry is in great need of donations of cleaning supplies, laundry detergent, paper goods (paper towels, napkins, toilet paper).

Come check out local environmentally-friendly vendors and bring your difficult to recycle items. Participate in green Earth Day activities for all ages! The day will include paper shredding, Styrofoam and electronics recycling, collections of cell phones, hearing aids, eyeglasses, gently used clothing and shoes, and crayons. Participating organizations will include Habitat for Humanity, the Warren Lion’s Club, the Watchung Gardening Club, the NJ Highland Commission, the Watchung Environmental Commission, Girl Scouts, Big Brothers & Big Sisters, the NJ Clean Energy Program, and more. Free seedlings and organic seed packets will be available and there will be fun Earth Day activities for all ages including recycling arts and crafts, Rizzo’s Reptiles, beach touch tables with live aquatic animals, sampling of organic prepared meals and coffee, beekeeping displays, and composting information.

Project EARTH Swamp Search Scavenger Hunt

Join the staff at the Environmental Education Center at Lord Stirling Park for an exciting scavenger hunt on the Environmental Education Center trails to learn about the importance of the Great Swamp as an ecological and recreational resource. Learn interesting facts about the Great Swamp and its inhabitants. This event is for friends, families, scouts or other groups to get outside and travel the trails while finding answers to our scavenger hunt questions. Return to the EEC for a program by Rick Mikula, “The Butterfly Guy” with his amazing butterfly exhibit including some live butterflies.

Central Jersey Stream Team Earth Day Cleanup

Join the Central Jersey Stream Team and its incredible volunteers to help clean up a site very much in need and help bridge the gap between the headwaters of the Raritan River and the Atlantic Ocean. This is a land based cleanup on the banks of the Raritan River in Bridgewater NJ near the Torpey Athletic Complex (202 Nimitz St. in Bridgewater). Meet up at 8:00 for breakfast and sign in. Gloves and tools will be provided. Remember to wear clothing you don’t mind getting dirty and possibly muddy. Despite having already removed over 1,500 tires at this site over the past 2 years as well as tons of other trash, there’s still much more work to do. Feel free to join the volunteers at any point throughout the day (call Joe at 201-396-8934 if you arrive and don’t see the volunteers near the meet-up area).
